It has been twenty years since I joined the Cape Bar and in that time I have practiced full time for approximately fifteen years. For the remainder, I have been involved in the wine business (Joostenberg) that I own with my brother, as well as with the greater Joostenberg group of businesses owned by myself, my parents and siblings. My practice at the Bar combines a general commercial litigation focus, specialising in tax law. Approximately fifty percent of my work involves tax litigation and in this regard I am briefed by both taxpayers and increasingly by SARS. In both commercial and tax matters I have appeared with and against Senior Counsel. I have appeared extensively in Magistrates’ and High Courts around the country, as well as in the Appeal Court. Since being appointed as Chairman of the Special Tax Board (which appointment was renewed in 2008), I have presided over approximately fifty matters in that forum. In 2007 I was appointed to the panel of the Arbitration Foundation of South Africa (AFSA) as an arbitrator and in 2016 as a mediator. I am familiar with alternative dispute resolution and am a staunch supporter of mediation.
