Short Bio

Adv Dorette Van Zyl was employed by the Department of Justice as a Family Advocate and since 2006 as Senior Family Advocate and Head of Office for 16 years till 2015 when she resigned to embark full time in mediation as a private practitioner and is now practicing as DORETTE VAN ZYL MEDIATORS. Adv Van Zyl gained extensive experience in Family Law, Family and Divorce mediation, the drafting of Parenting Plans, and conducting inquiries regarding the best interests of children. She is a director and co-founder of The Mediators Association Free State& Northern Cape, a mediation service provider organization, launched in 2014 with the aim to be involved in training and accreditation of mediators in the Free State and Northern Cape. She possesses a BIuris, LLB and LLM degree in Labour Law,and Law of Estate and Wills, is extensively experienced by her years of service as Family Advocate as well as mediation training in Family mediation by FAMAC, LEAD,Institute of Family Mediation and Commercial mediation by [email protected] Her passion for Family Law dates back since embarking on her legal career and she developed a special interest for mediation during her LLM studies in Labour Law. These interests combined when she was appointed as Family Advocate shortly after the inception of the Office of the Family Advocate which was created in terms of The Mediation in Certain Divorce Matters Act. Before her appointment as Family Advocate she lectured at the University of the Free State in Constitutional Law, Family Law and Law of Contracts. She was also invited as guest lecturer to be part of the PhD program for Psychologists at UOFS and is accredited with FAMAC a member of DISAC, (Dispute Settlement Accreditation Council) and is a member of SAWLA (South African woman Lawyer's Association)
