Hold B.Com, LL.B and LL.M degrees, apart from UCT/MiM mediation certificate. After three years in management in a corporate environment in Pretoria, joined the Justice Department. Acted as prosecutor in various courts at all levels, including seven years as a senior state advocate with the then Attorney General, dealing primarily with commercial matters. Acted as additional magistrate, Grahamstown for three months. Called to the Bar in 1988. Had a general legal practice covering civil, commercial, labour, family and criminal matters for 13 years. Clients ranged from private individuals and corporates to government departments and public institutions. Also involved in disciplinary matters at Rhodes University. Helped establish Asset Forfeiture Unit in 2001 as Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions with responsibility for the Eastern Cape, based in Port Elizabeth. Retired in January 2017. Involved in chairing disciplinary proceedings. Member of the National Bar Council. Participated in setting up a mediation panel at home church. Involved in settling community disputes informally. Passionate about achieving reconciliation between parties. Understand relationships are fragile, sometimes needing guidance to find a win-win solution beyond the law. Keen on developing and promoting the practice of mediation in our area.
