After graduating from Rhodes University, Salma completed her training at Joubert Galpin Searle under Michael Searle, who was senior partner at the time. It was from him she gained invaluable insights into the spirit as well as into the meaning of the law. She left in 2003 and returned in 2007, after spending two years as a partner at Friedman Scheckter Incorporated and two years as a legal advisor at Santam. Salma holds a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (Port Elizabeth College for Advanced Technical Education) and a Master’s Degree in Philosophy (Rhodes University). She obtained her LLB (Rhodes University) in 1993 and has been practicing in insurance law since 1994. Currently she specializes in professional negligence claims against attorneys. Her approach is to carry out the mandate of the Attorneys’ Insurance Indemnity Fund, which is to protect the integrity of the legal profession and to safeguard the interests of members of the public who have been poorly served by their attorneys. Salma has no experience, yet, of formal mediation. However, her approach to law is one of mediation and negotiation of claims, rather than formal litigation. She appreciates the benefits of a win-win, rather than winner takes all, methodology.
