Monique is a lecturer in the Department of Commercial Law at the University of Cape Town (UCT). Having graduated with an LLB from the University of the Western Cape (UWC), Monique completed two LLMs in quick succession – her first LLM in Dispute Resolution at the University of Missouri (U.S), and her second LLM in Labour Law at UWC. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Commercial Law at UCT where she also lectures Dispute Resolution, Mediation, Labour Law and Business Law. Monique has a vision of expanding the area of resolving disputes through mediation. Mediation should no longer be viewed as an alternative process. However, it should be the primary medium by which parties resolve their dispute. She combines her theoretical knowledge of the law with practical mediation and negotiation skills to resolve disputes. Her approach to dispute resolution is that communication is vital to resolving conflict. She also believes that people simply want to be heard and tell their story. Therefore, we should always be quick to listen and slow to speak.
