Dr Barry Smith graduated with a MBChB from Stellenbosch University in 2009 and obtained a Diploma in Anaesthetics of the College of Anaesthetists of South Africa (CMSA). He has worked in the public and private health sector in the North West and Western Cape Provinces and spent most of his clinical career in anaesthetics and emergency medicine departments. He has been appointed Medical Manager of the Swartland and Bergriver Sub-Districts in the Western Cape Department of Health since 2016. In his management role he oversees strategic planning, people management, finance and supply management, quality assurance and risk management, infrastructure developments and collaborates with external stakeholders like community structures, private entities and other government departments. His focus areas are medical negligence, workplace and societal disputes. He is a strong believer in the principles of mediation which he feels can successfully be applied in any conflict situation.
