Carlien van Heerden is a Neonatal Nurse Specialist, Medico-Legal Neonatal Nursing Expert, Neonatal Consultant, Quality improvement Specialist, and Mediator with her own consultancy practice. Carlien holds a BCur degree in Nursing Science (2001), Master’s degree in Advanced Neonatal Nursing Science (2004), Nursing Education (2005), PhD in Neonatal Nursing Science (2015), and Post-doctoral degree (2016), from the University of Pretoria. She completed the Foundations of Medical-Legal Practice Course by SAMLA and UCT in 2018, and qualified as a Medical Negligence and Health Sector Mediator from the University of Cape Town (2019). She is a board member of the Neonatal Nurses Association of Southern Africa, member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honour Society of Nursing and the South African Medico-Legal Association. Carlien is passionate about Mediation as an alternative dispute resolution, as the concerns, needs and interest of all parties involved are addressed, aimed at finding amicable solutions and restoring relationships. She has been assisting law firms as a nursing expert since 2016 and has gained extensive knowledge regarding medical negligence. Carlien believes that the benefits and nature of Mediation will play a key role in addressing the high number of litigations in South Africa’s Health Sector.
