Gregory Whittaker, Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa and Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, has 19 years of experience in the quantification of damages in medical negligence, road accident fund and general litigation matters. Gregory has prepared expert actuarial reports in thousands of matters and has been exposed to a wide array of medical negligence matters. He has given expert testimony in numerous matters in South African High Courts and in Namibia, and is frequently briefed by plaintiff and defendant firms of attorneys. Due to his exposure to the courts as an expert witness (where in some matters he has been retained as both the plaintiff actuary and the defendant actuary) he decided to pursue the mediation path as an alternative form of dispute resolution recognizing the potential for parties to come to a mediated solution. He subsequently qualified as a commercial mediator through the UCT/ MiM programme. He believes that mediation is a constructive platform to transform individuals, commercial entities and government institutions that are faced with conflict.
